Thanks to our First Responders Today

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Austin Texas was in the news all day today. We witnessed up close the terrifying sight of a building flaming and billowing with gusts of smoke. As news developed about the two fires that were somehow related, we were on edge in anticipation as the facts were revealed. Firefighters and police officers responded with adrenaline pumping, not knowing what they would be called upon to do, but go they did on duty to save lives, secure property and calm fears of the frightened.

We owe gratitude to these brave men and women who were on the site immediately, working to bring the fire under control and to investigate the situation. One man who never imagined being a hero this morning certainly was as he assisted five people out of a window from the burning building. He happened to be at the Echelon Building this morning with the ladder he uses to install glass, but he went to bed tonight a hero. Robin DeHaven managed to act quickly to secure his ladder in a way that he could help frightened people out of the building and to safety. His training in the Army and his sense of duty to his fellow citizens kicked into gear and he moved quickly and efficiently to respond.

Thanks to his actions and those of the first responders on duty, there were fewer casualties and injuries than would have been expected in a building in which over 200 people work. My heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation to all who acted with selflessness and compassion today. Many are home safely with their loved ones tonight because of your courage today. God bless you, all.
